Coolant selection is one of the most overlooked aspects of radiator care in India. Many operators still use plain tap water in their cooling systems, and many others mix incompatible coolant types without realising the chemical consequences. This guide explains what you need to know to make the right coolant choice for your equipment.
What Coolant Does (It's Not Just Anti-Freeze)
The name "antifreeze" is misleading for Indian conditions — freezing is rarely a concern outside of Himalayan operations. But coolant serves four equally critical functions regardless of climate:
- Heat transfer: Coolant carries heat from the engine block to the radiator. Water actually transfers heat well, but only pure coolant/water mixtures offer the optimal balance of heat capacity and boiling point.
- Corrosion inhibition: Coolant contains chemical packages that coat the internal surfaces of the radiator, engine block, and head — preventing electrochemical attack on aluminium, copper, brass, and iron surfaces.
- Cavitation protection: Diesel engine cylinder liners are subject to cavitation erosion. Certain coolant types (those with nitrite/molybdate inhibitors) protect against this specific failure mode.
- Seal compatibility: Coolant must be compatible with the rubber seals and hoses in your cooling system. Wrong coolant types can degrade seals and cause internal leaks.

Correct Concentration for Indian Conditions
In Indian climates, a 30–40% coolant concentration in DM (demineralized) water is the standard recommendation. This provides adequate corrosion protection without the unnecessary concentration that some operators use. Do not use concentrations above 60% — beyond this point, the heat transfer capability of the mixture actually deteriorates and you lose the benefit you are paying for.
Water Quality Matters as Much as Coolant
Even the best coolant formulation loses effectiveness when mixed with hard tap water containing dissolved minerals. Always use demineralized (DM) water or distilled water when mixing coolant. DM water costs ₹2–5 per litre from industrial suppliers — a negligible cost compared to the damage hard water causes over time.
